Bilingual video series “Immigration 101” breaks down some of the basics of US Immigration

SOCAL CONNECTED, KCET’s award-winning weekly half-hour local news series, produces the series of short one to two-minute videos, hosted by two-time Emmy® Award-winning reporter/anchor for KTLA Elizabeth Espinosa.  Seven videos in total (in both English and Spanish) will roll out through the end of July utilizing fun graphics and conversational language to explain the basics of immigration history, law and policy.

“Immigration 101,” is available to viewers starting today online at kcet.org/immigration and linktv.org/immigration as well as on KCET’s YouTube and social media platforms.

Among the topics explained:

 

– Key immigration laws that have changed America over time

– Sanctuary cities defined

– Refugees, asylum seekers immigrants, migrants: what’s the difference?

– The facts behind immigrant labor

– Immigration enforcement by the numbers

– The diversity factor: What will America look like in future decades?

 

Additional information will be included in online articles written by La Opinion’s senior immigration journalist and author Pilar Marrero, who was also a consultant on the series. Pilar Marrero is a journalist who for 25 years has extensively covered the areas of city government, immigration and state and national politics.

She works for La Opinion, the largest and oldest Spanish language daily paper in America. She’s a senior reporter on immigration and politics as well as a regular commentator for radio and television in both Spanish and English media. Her work has won awards and fellowships from New America Media, the New School and the International Center for Journalists for her coverage of the issues and challenges of the Latino community.

She’s the author of “El Despertar del Sueño Americano” published by Penguin Books. The English version of the book “Killing the American Dream,” is published by Palgrave McMillan.

Also featured: A multimedia project by SOCAL CONNECTED producer Lata Pandya, who explores the struggles of LA’s asylum seekers and profiles the counselors and lawyers who are trying to help them get out of legal limbo.

Elizabeth Espinosa is an Emmy® award winning television and radio host.  Currently, Elizabeth is a reporter/anchor with the award winning KTLA 5 News station in Los Angeles covering assignments for the morning and evening broadcasts.  Additionally, Elizabeth hosts her own iHeart Radio talk radio show, “Sunday with Elizabeth Espinosa” 5-6am on KFI-AM 640.  Elizabeth was also the host of “Studio SoCal”, a weekly public affairs television talk show on PBS SoCal that tackled current events and provided in-depth analysis.  Elizabeth, is also a familiar face to local news where she made her mark at Univision’s K-MEX 34, and KTTV-FOX 11 “Good Day L.A.”
