Mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus have been found in Mexico, Central America, parts of South America and the Caribbean. To make sure blood donations are free of the virus, STBTC is asking anyone who travels to those regions to wait until 28 days after their return to donate blood.
Four out of five people who contract the Zika virus never have any symptoms. But the virus has been linked to birth defects and a neurological condition called Guillain-Barrè syndrome, and STBTC, the Food and Drug Administration and the Center for Disease Control are working to maintain the safety of the blood supply.
The problem with delayed donations is that there are patients all across South Texas in immediate need of blood. Blood and its components are in constant demand, used in helping people undergoing treatment for cancer and accident victims, as well as those having surgery or being treated for a wide range of illnesses. There is no substitute for blood.
A whole blood donation takes less than an hour and can be completed at one of seven donation sites in San Antonio, New Braunfels and Victoria, or at one of dozens of mobile blood drives across South Texas.

Donors must present identification. Anyone who is 16 years old and weighs at least 120 pounds (with parental consent form), or 17 years old and weighs at least 110 pounds and is in good general health may donate blood. The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC) is a nonprofit community blood center providing blood, plasma, platelets and other blood components to hospitals throughout South Texas. STBTC has seven donor rooms in South Texas and conducts multiple mobile blood drives each week.
